AFMADOW (Jubaland Tv) – The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management for Jubaland, Hon. Abdirahman Mohamed, leading a high-level delegation, arrived in the Afmadow district of Lower Juba today to assess the extensive impact of the ongoing drought on the lives of the local population.
Key Meetings and Consultations
The Minister held an extensive meeting with the Afmadow district administration, security officials, and representatives of humanitarian organizations operating in the region. The discussions focused on:
- Situation Assessment: The Minister received detailed briefings from local officials on how the drought has severely crippled the daily livelihoods of the community.
- Emergency Response Planning: Coordinating an immediate relief plan to reach the most vulnerable families.
- Identifying Obstacles: Addressing the challenges hindering the delivery of aid and finding sustainable solutions.
Visit to Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) Camps
Hon. Abdirahman Mohamed and his delegation conducted a field visit to IDP camps located on the outskirts of Afmadow. The Minister spoke directly with several families who have lost their livestock—their primary source of income—and have fled distant rural areas in search of water and food.
“Afmadow is among the areas most severely affected by the drought, with a massive influx of displaced persons who are in desperate need of urgent humanitarian intervention,” said one of the ministry officials.
The Need for Urgent Aid
In recent months, Afmadow has become a hub for thousands of people displaced by the prolonged absence of rain and the worsening drought conditions. The Minister pledged that the ministry would exert every effort to ensure these communities receive consistent support, while calling on international agencies to scale up their assistance to the region.
